CHALLENGE

Methane emissions from livestock housing without effective removal technologies

TECHNOLOGY

Photochemical system for methane oxidation in ventilation air

POTENTIAL

Enables large‑scale emission reduction in livestock production

Goal

The aim of the project is to document the mitigation potential of a methane eradication photochemical system (MEPS) in pig and cattle housing.
Pig and cattle production accounts for 97% of methane emissions in Danish agriculture. MEPS is a novel methane oxidation technology with the potential to remove large quantities of methane and ammonia from livestock ventilation air. This project will test the effectiveness of MEPS in realistic production conditions.

Plan

The project is planned to run for two years.
Chemical process modelling will be used to determine optimal methane removal and ammonia capture.
A MEPS prototype will then be configured for mechanical pig house ventilation and tested in realistic livestock production conditions. A ventilation and control system will also be designed for optimal MEPS integration.
The project will analyse the prototype’s performance and evaluate the potential to implement MEPS in cattle housing with various ventilation scenarios.

Expected results

When the project is complete, MEPS units will be ready for further commercial development. Implementation is expected within two to three years. IPR will be secured.
MEPS technology has potential to remove >90% of emissions from pig houses and 50-90% of emissions from cattle houses, creating an overall reduction potential of 4.1 to 5.7 tons CO2 equivalent.
As no technologies are currently available for removing methane from livestock ventilation air, the product will have great commercial potential in Denmark and on export markets.
