CHALLENGE

Conventional mechanical weed control is energy-intensive and contributes to CO₂e emissions

TECHNOLOGY

A tractor-mounted system using computer vision and targeted laser treatment for precision in-row weed control

POTENTIAL

Reduced emissions and resource use, with validated data to support laser weeding as a climate-efficient alternative

Can precision laser weeding cut CO₂ emissions? Field validation under real Danish farming conditions.

The project aims to clarify whether precision-based laser weed control can reduce CO₂e emissions per hectare compared to conventional mechanical weed control under Danish field conditions. The project is based on the hypothesis that targeted laser treatment can achieve effective intra-row weed control while reducing resource consumption and maintaining operational feasibility.

A tractor-mounted system combining computer vision and targeted laser treatment will be validated under relevant field conditions in collaboration with Danish farmers.

The project will document weed control efficacy, treatment speed, energy consumption, treatment precision, and operational feasibility, and quantify the associated CO₂e emissions per hectare.

The results will provide a data-driven basis for assessing the technology as a climate-efficient alternative to existing practice and for defining the requirements for a subsequent larger-scale innovation project.
