CHALLENGE

Conventional mechanical weed control requires repeated field operations and contributes to fuel consumption, soil disturbance, and CO₂e emissions

TECHNOLOGY

A tractor-mounted precision laser weeding system using computer vision and current laser technology for targeted intra-row weed treatment

POTENTIAL

Initial CO₂e measurements and field data can help assess whether precision laser weeding has the potential to become a climate-efficient alternative to existing weed control practices

Can precision laser weeding reduce CO₂ emissions? Initial measurements under Danish field conditions.

The project aims to generate initial data on the CO₂e reduction potential of precision-based laser weed control compared to conventional mechanical weed control in Danish crop production. The project focuses on documenting the climate impact of using current laser technology for targeted weed treatment under relevant Danish field conditions.

The work is based on the hypothesis that precision laser treatment can reduce resource use and CO₂e emissions by replacing or reducing mechanical weed control, while still maintaining effective intra-row weed management.

A tractor-mounted system combining computer vision and targeted laser treatment will be tested at Aarhus University. The project will collect initial measurements on weed control efficacy, treatment speed, energy consumption, treatment precision, and operational feasibility. These data will be used to estimate the associated CO₂e emissions per hectare.

The results will provide an early, data-driven basis for assessing the climate potential of precision laser weeding and for identifying the key technical and operational requirements for a subsequent larger-scale innovation project.
