CHALLENGE
Food waste remains an underutilized resource with significant environmental impact
TECHNOLOGY
Modular biorefinery technologies for extracting valuable compounds from food waste
POTENTIAL
Creates circular value chains for biofuels, bioplastics and bio-based ingredients
The project transforms supermarket food waste into biofuels, bioplastics and other high-value products.
The project focuses on extracting fats for biofuel production while also exploring opportunities to recover proteins and other valuable components from food waste streams. By combining multiple processing steps in a modular biorefinery setup, the solution aims to maximize resource utilization and minimize waste.
Modern By Products evaluates the biofuel potential of the recovered fats, while Organicum Biomass contributes expertise to support future scale-up. Danish Technological Institute investigates downstream protein extraction and supports process development through techno-economic evaluations.
Curcle and Global Montage contribute expertise in modular biorefinery design and help develop pathways for converting organic waste into lactic acid for bioplastic production.
Together, the partners aim to create a scalable platform that transforms food waste into valuable resources, strengthens the circular economy and contributes to regional climate and sustainability goals.
