CHALLENGE
Limited sustainable alternatives to conventional UV-filter systems
TECHNOLOGY
Functional bio-based ingredients from fast-growing cyanobacteria
POTENTIAL
Improves performance and sustainability in modern sun care products
The project develops innovative bio-based ingredients from cyanobacteria to support more effective and sustainable sun care formulations.
Using fast-growing cyanobacteria as a renewable source, the project develops functional ingredients that can enhance existing UV-filter systems while addressing environmental and regulatory challenges in the cosmetics industry and improving formulation performance for next-generation products.
Lifebloom leads the project in collaboration with Danish Technological Institute, OQEMA and Riemann. Together, the partners combine expertise in biotechnology, ingredient development, distribution and formulation to develop and validate innovative new ingredients and sun care prototypes.
Beyond sun care applications, the project aims to establish a scalable platform for producing high-value bio-based ingredients from CO2-fixing microorganisms. The initiative has the potential to strengthen Denmark's position in green chemistry and support the transition towards more sustainable personal care products.
