CHALLENGE

Low-value utilization of biological side streams

TECHNOLOGY

Bio-based composites made from walnut shells and food industry by-products

POTENTIAL

Creates circular materials with a low environmental footprint

The project develops bio-based composites by combining walnut shells with underutilized side streams from the food industry.

The company’s material platform is based on upcycled walnut shells and has already demonstrated its potential in low-impact applications such as biodegradable urns.

The project explores how underutilized Danish side streams, including rapeseed press cake, fruit pulp and eggshells, can improve the performance and versatility of the material. By incorporating these natural additives, the partners aim to create stronger, more adaptable composites suitable for a wider range of applications.

Together with project partners, Nuterials will develop and test new material formulations, build early prototypes and evaluate their performance. The project will also share knowledge and results across industry networks to accelerate the adoption of circular material solutions.

The ambition is to increase the value of biological side streams and contribute to a future where circular, bio-based materials become a natural alternative to conventional products.
