CHALLENGE
Limited efficiency in extracting valuable lipids from microalgae
TECHNOLOGY
Mechanical cell disruption combined with supercritical CO₂ extraction
POTENTIAL
Improves the viability of microalgae-based fuels and bio-based products
Microalgae offer a promising source of lipids that can serve as feedstocks for biofuels and a range of high-value bio-based products. However, efficient lipid extraction remains a key challenge for improving the economic viability of microalgae-based production.
The project focuses on developing and validating more efficient methods for extracting lipids from microalgae. Algiecel and DTU's BCBT research group combine their expertise to investigate how mechanical cell disruption can improve both the quantity and quality of lipids recovered from algal biomass.
The partners will evaluate bead milling as a pre-treatment technology prior to supercritical CO₂ extraction. By optimizing process conditions, the project aims to maximize lipid yield while maintaining product quality and process efficiency.
The results will provide valuable insights into downstream processing of microalgae and support the development of more competitive and scalable biorefinery solutions. Ultimately, the project will help strengthen the foundation for sustainable production of biofuels and other bio-based ingredients from microalgae.
