CHALLENGE
Limited availability of strong performing sustainable colour solutions for plastics
TECHNOLOGY
Bio-based pigments colouring plastic product applications
POTENTIAL
Sustainable plastic products
The demand for sustainable materials continues to grow, and manufacturers are increasingly requiring colour solutions that deliver on both performance and sustainability. Octarine Bio has combined the consistency and scalability of producing synthetic pigments with the sustainability of biology to create drop-in bio-based coloring solutions.
This project will assess the compatibility of PurePalette pigments in plastics, and the pigment solution will be tested in a broad array of polymers. Pigment formulations will be developed and tested, from using the raw pigments directly in the injection molded process, to using them in formulated masterbatch pellets for production of fully finished product applications that meet performance standards.
Through the project J. Krebs & Co. and Octarine Bio will scale up the most promising formulations and produce commercial samples that will demonstrate the pigments' performance after they have been through a commercial manufacturing process.
By combining bio-based pigments with bioplastics, the project supports the transition towards more sustainable material solutions and creates new opportunities to reduce reliance on fossil-based additives within the plastics industry.
