REPORT

Quantitative validation of biotech trust barriers

How do European consumers perceive biotechnology in food and bio-based products - and what shapes their trust?

This report from the B-TRUST project presents insights from a large-scale European consumer survey exploring trust in biotechnology and bio-based solutions.

Based on responses from 2,500 consumers across five countries, the study validates key trust barriers identified through earlier co-creation activities and provides new insights into how consumers understand biotechnology, where their concerns lie, and how acceptance varies across different applications.

The findings highlight a complex picture: while many consumers recognise the potential of biotechnology - particularly in supporting a more sustainable future - concerns related to health, transparency and perceived naturalness continue to influence trust and acceptance.

The report provides a valuable knowledge base for companies, policymakers and organisations working with bio-based innovation and communication.
